By now you have probably figured out that camp can be an incredibly fun experience for your youngster, and from a parents perspective, you know it can be the start of an exceptional journey of growing, learning and seeing a whole new world. It can also be a decision that requires some deep thought, and that leads to lots of questions. With so many camps out there, how do you go about making the choice of the one that is right for you? Here’s some handy tips for you to consider when determining the summer experience just right for your camper to be…

Picking the right camp…

The truth is, it is a lot of work in making the choice that will be the start of something that creates a lifetime of memories – choosing the right camp for your aspiring camper.

Take a close look at your camper. Loves the out-of-doors? Prefers the comfort of that climate-controlled environment? How about special likes? Dislikes? Swim is important? Sports? More of a crafts kinda camper? Loving the arts, but not that focused on the media or medium? Likes to get dirt under their fingernails? More intellectually focused, than physically focused activities? You know your camper best, you know what works best – this is how the search starts…

And don’t forget your questions…Is transportation a concern, day camp, sleep away camp, medical staffing, daily schedules, costs, counselor staffing, background checks, bunking policies, is the camp too big, too small, have a good number of fields, appropriate swimming opportunities, administrative leadership and experience, safety, is accreditation a point of the discussion – and that list just goes on and on.

Whew, too many questions, but you get the idea. You really do know your camper best. If your camper is old enough, ask what they would like to do. Talk to the camp director, ask to talk to other camp parents. Look at your camp through your camper’s eyes, their confidence level and their social level and where you would like to see them after a summer. Camp, when done right isn’t just about fun (though like we said above, that’s all that matters to your camper), it is also about growing, independence, confidence, socializing, creating a comfort level.

Of course we’d love to see your camper at BT Camps, that’s a given. But in truth, there are lots of outstanding programs out there and you have a big decision before you. Bottom line, camp really can make a world of difference in the life of your camper to be. Our own biases aside, camp, if you can swing it, is a great choice for your youngster.
